A DEACON’S PRAYER
AFTER HOLY COMMUNION

This prayer is attributed to St. Ephrem and is said by the deacon during the Malabar Divine Liturgy. The original Syriac text was published in The Uniat Missal, Rome, 1844. This translation (modified) was taken from Liturgies of St. Mark, St. James. St. Clement and St. John Chrysostom, 1859. Seventh ed.

Strengthen, O Lord, these hands which stretched out to receive the Holy Gifts: grant that they may daily bring forth fruit to Your divinity; that they may be worthy of all things which they have done for Your praise within Your Holy of Holies; that the ears which have heard the voices of Your songs, may never hear the voice of clamour and dispute. Grant also that the eyes which have seen Your great Love, may also behold Your blessed hope; that the tongues which have sung HOLY, may speak the truth. Grant that the feet which have walked in Your Temple, may walk in the region of Light: that the bodies which have tasted Your living Body and Blood, may be restored to newness of life.

On this congregation also, which adores Your divinity, let Your grace be multiplied, and let Your great Love remain with us; and by You may we abound in the manifestation of Your Glory, and open a door to the prayers of all of us. We all then, who have drawn near by the Gift of the grace of the Holy Spirit, and to whom it has been granted to become fellow participators in the reception of these Mysteries, most excellent, holy, divine and life-giving, let us all praise and exult in God, the Giver.
