A strict fast is prescribed by law for this day. Because of the Annunciation, there is a mitigation for wine only. Dark vestments are worn for all services on this day. [It would seem so since all feasts of the Cross have dark or red vestments. Note that the Typicons usually do not prescribe vestment colors. The Bogosluzhebnyj Ustav of Moscow, 1902, prescribes that the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in bright vestments, but that the priest changes to dark for the Procession with the Burial Shroud, p. 620. This opinion is also held by Mikita, Tipikon, p. 230.] The Tomb should be set up before Matins prescribed for this day.

Matins

Dark vestments [Mikita: neither light nor black] are worn for all services today.

Royal Hours

Before the Royal Hours, the plaschanitsa (Burial Shroud) is placed on the Holy Table beneath the Gospel Book. The order for the celebration of Royal Hours may be found on January 5, p. 2. Dark vestments are worn. The Old Testament Readings are given in EOT 29 1-292 and the Epistles in EOT 199-200. The order for Good Friday is followed, that is, the stichera, prokeimenons and readings, except that at the Troparion we sing the Troparion of Good Friday for the Hour at Glory and at Now and ever, the Troparion of the Annunciation. Likewise, at the kontakion, we sing the Kontakion of Good Friday, then immediately the kontakion of the Annunciation, and "Lord, have mercy," forty times and the rest.

Procession with the Burial Shroud

The Typicon does not prescribe the Procession with the Burial Shroud, but it may take place as follows: After the Ambon prayer, the Aposticha for Good Friday are sung [for pastoral reasons, they may be omitted, but may be necessary if the priest and deacon change from bright to dark vestments at this time]; the priest incenses the Burial Shroud on the Holy Table. Then, taking the Shroud upon his shoulders, and preceded by the Processional Cross, candles and incense, he goes around the Holy Table and leaves the sanctuary through the Northern Door of the icon screen. The church is then circled three times (option: one procession around the church may be made) and the Burial Shroud is placed in the Tomb at the singing of the Troparion, "The noble Joseph...." The procession is made outside the church if possible. The Ambon Prayer 27 for this day, from the time when the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated on Good Friday, "O Lord Jesus Christ our God, Savior of the world..." may be read after the burial shroud has been placed in the tomb.

Dismissal: "May Christ our true God, who endured dreadful sufferings, the life-giving Cross, and voluntary burial for our salvation, have mercy on us and save us, through the prayers of his most pure Mother, whose Annunciation we gloriously celebrate today ..."

Small Compline: MMLT 617-621. Canon of the Lamentation. In place of the usual Troparia, the Kontakion of Good Friday.
